Welcome to my website for 2011 and 2012.
Some big changes for students this year.
1. The government has announced that provincial scholarship monies will be determined by the students standing based on their five mandatory provincial exams in Grades 10, 11 and 12: Math, Science, and English 10, Social Studies 11, and English 12. They also stated that optional Gr. 12 exams will no longer be offered. Post Secondary bound students will need to treat their three grade 10 courses seriously for their $1000 or $2000 scholarships.
2. This year will have new curricula being introduced in Gr. 11. Portable One will have Foundations of Math 11, Pre-Calculus 11 and Pre-Calculus 11 Enriched. The enriched courses, Math 9/10, Foundations and Pre-Calculus 10 Enriched, and Pre-Calculus 11 Enriched will use the
McGraw-Hill- Ryerson textbook for their grade. Pre-Calc 11 Enriched students can also purchase a workbook to aid their learning. Foundations 11, Pre-Calculus 11 and Foundations and Pre-Calculus 10 will use the Absolute Value Publications workbook. Students who purchase them for around $16.00 will be able to write in them and keep them. Students who chose not to purchase this workbook will treat it as a textbook and copy their excercises into their notebooks and return the book at the end of the year. Owning their own will give them an advantage of less time required to take notes and do their homework.. See the link on the left side of this page for course previews and content.
3. I will be working with Ms. Harpreet Cheema for the fall. She is a student teacher from SFU completing her training. She is an experienced math teacher seeking her BC qualifications for teaching. This also means that there will be lots of help. You can find these help times by visiting the homework pages found on the left side. We will post a week at a time.
4. I am completing my Masters' degree in Educational Practice with SFU this year. I am inquiring into improving student learning by involving students in formative assessment through feedback. Formative assessment is analyzing our practicing while preparing for summative assessments (what counts for letter grades – usually tests). Learners, like athletes and musicians, need feedback during practice so they can perform their best. Another comparison would be pilots in training fly simulators
where their performances are monitored and feedback given to improve their flying before having to land a plane where people's lives are in the balance. I will be asking students to help with the research since they are the ones who know what is helping them and what doesn't. The research will also help the students because they will be focussing on the key ideas of a unit and helping others learn with this knowledge. A letter seeking your permission will go home in early September.
I aim to help students, parents and teachers find useful materials.
