PERSONAL SAFETY OF STUDENTS
It is extremely important that the school has your current emergency phone numbers!

Pupil's Injury, Illness, First Aid
If a child becomes ill during school hours we will call the parents.  In the event that nobody is home, the neighbor, friend or relative listed as the emergency contact will be notified.

Emergencies and accidents do occur in spite of careful supervision of activities.  School personnel handle routine cuts and scrapes.  The nurse is only at the school on Thursday mornings and schools are generally not equipped to look after ill or injured pupils beyond band-aids or cold compresses.

If any injury is more severe and will require parent supervision or treatment beyond the school's capabilities the parent or guardian will be contacted.

It is important that you advise the school office of a person(s) to contact in the event of an emergency.  Regularly update the information on school file records with current telephone numbers so that in the event of such an emergency the appropriate person can be contacted quickly.
If nobody can be contacted for the child, we will judge whether hospital treatment is required.  Either an ambulance will be called or a staff member will take the child to the hospital.

Road Safety
Students are taught both pedestrian and bicycle safety rules.  They are expected to walk on available paths, to walk on the left side of the road in single file and to cross at the pedestrian crossing only.  Cyclists are to walk bicycles on the playground and must ride bicycles on the right side of the road in a single line.  Doubling is very unsafe and is not allowed. Helmets must be worn if students are on a bicycle, scooter or skateboard.

Safety of Students To and From School
Teachers frequently review these safety practices with their classes:
1)      Students should always try to walk to and from school with other students.

2)      Students should always go directly to school and directly home after school.  They should try to take the same route each day-- a route their parents are aware of.  Students must call home if staying at school after 3:10 p.m. and only if requested by a teacher to stay.

3)      If approached by a stranger, students should not engage in conversation or offer directions/help but should proceed to school, their own home or the nearest Block Parents' home (whichever is closest) for assistance.  Students should report any such incidents to their parents and to us as soon as possible, so that the R.C.M.P. can be notified.

4)      If a stranger makes physical contact, students should scream loudly to attract attention to the situation.

5)      Students should remind their parents to contact the Early Warning System if they are absent or late coming to school, so that they are accounted for.

I.D. Badges
The Richmond School District has an I.D. Badge Program.

School-based permanent staff (e.g. teachers, administrators, etc.) and parents entering the school to drop off or pick up their children will NOT wear I.D. Badges.

Visitors to the school will be given a colored badge with the school's name and the word "VISITOR" or "STAFF" (in the case of Teachers-On-Call, etc.).

Parents doing special projects in the school (i.e. early warning, hot dog day, etc.) are considered "visitors" and should report to the office.

Picture I.D. badges will be worn by permanent district staff such as the superintendent, trustees, area counsellors, maintenance staff etc.
