Packer Idol a Huge Success
Just like the popular television series, our Student Council organized the annual Packer Idol contest in late February. This singing contest is held at most Richmond high schools and all the school finalists compete at a Richmond-wide Idol contest each spring. The preliminary rounds at Steveston saw 10 contestants singing hit tunes in front of packed audiences in the lunchroom. The talent level was exceptional and the judges had a difficult time selecting the top singers for the finals. Well done Angela Duan, Jasiel Jao, Sam Chung, Elias Chu, Kelsie Pelling, Celina Ng, Lisette Wee, Sam Wade, Elaine Cheung and Charlene Tang. On Friday, February 23 the finalists performed brilliantly in front of an enthusiastic, standing-room-only crowd in the gym at lunch. Judges included Mr. Wallace, Ms. Hoffman, Andrew Simon Kowan and Mr. Dewald. Congratulations to all the contestants and to Kelsie Pelling on being named Packer Idol 2007!
Steveston Mathematicians Calculate Contest Exams
96 Steveston students (approximately 1 in 6 of all students) recently wrote the University of Waterloo math contest exams. The national contests (Pascal, Cayley, Fermat) expose students in Grades 9, 10 and 11 to challenging mathematics exams to see how they are able to perform in comparison to other students from across Canada. Thanks to Mrs. Russell and Mr. Lancaster for organizing these opportunities for our young mathematicians! Congratulations to Charles Wang (Grade 9), Ryan Lo (Grade 10), and He Soo Heo (Grade 11) for being the top students at Steveston. Equally impressively, 25 of 33 Grade 9 Steveston exam writers scored 100 on the exam - which places them among the top percentile in Canada.
Music Department News
Stevestons music department started the second semester off with a fabulous performance at the Gateway Theatre for the Jazz Band and our Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Steveston Sings! The performances were part of the Education Week events and to kick off "Music in Our Schools" in March. The Gateway event hosted Jazz performances from Richmond area secondary schools and Steveston was represented in fine form and our musicians received rave reviews. Looking ahead, the Saturday, April 28 "Open House" part of Steveston's 50th Anniversary celebrations will be alive with musical performances from a variety of student ensembles. The music department will also be involved in the Spring musical, The Wizard of Oz which runs in the first week of May. Our year end recital will be held in June featuring the fine talent of our Steveston students.

Justice Theatre at Steveston
The Peoples Law School was founded in 1972 by a group of UBC law students who wanted to create an independent, non-profit group dedicated to educating people about all aspects of the law. This group also runs the Justice Theatre and they offer hour-long performances on a range of topics affecting young people, including bullying, street racing, shoplifting and hate crimes. These performances are a great way to raise awareness and to stimulate discussion of these issues among students. On February 14, every Steveston student in Grade 8 and 9 (and our Law 12 students) watched an excellent court room drama (a mock trial) involving a student charged with uttering threats after he allegedly sent threatening emails and set up a web site about another student at school. As part of our schools focus on social responsibility this very relevant topic was very informative and engaging. The performance included talented actors in the roles of judge, defendant, defense lawyer, Crown Council and witnesses. There was an introduction, presentation of evidence, jury deliberation (the jury was made up of Steveston students), and student discussion and questions. Parents can find out more about The Peoples Law School at www.publiclegaled.ca
International Issues Club 30-Hour Famine in April
Stevestons International Issues club will again organize the World Vision 30-Hour Famine over April 12 and 13. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness and funds for the plight of hundreds of millions of people around the world who face malnutrition and hunger every day. Students who want to participate in the sleep-over at the school must be committed to the cause by securing at least $50 in pledges and going without food for 30 hours. Students are encouraged to demonstrate their social responsibility by learning more about hunger in struggling countries and by participating in the Famine or pledging others - see Mr. Mitsis and Mr. Parker to get involved in this important global issue.
March is National Nutrition Month
Good nutrition is important for all of us but critically important for children and teenagers. Cook it up Healthy is this years theme for Canadas National Nutrition month. Canadians are cooking less and although most of us want to eat healthy, it is a challenge to find quick and easy yet nutritious meal solutions. Families who prepare and eat meals together have healthier eating habits. For time saving food solutions go to:
www.dietitians.ca/eatwell and following the link to Nutrition Month. According to a survey done by Canadian Living Foundation, Canadian children receive a C when it comes to their diet. Only 61% of our children and teens eat 4 or more servings of vegetables and fruit per day (excluding fruit juices and French fries), eat 2 or more servings of whole grains cereals and 3 or more servings of milk and calcium-fortified beverages per day. For more findings go to:
http://www.breakfastforlearning.ca/english/resources/pop/reportcardfinal.pdf.
The newly revised Canadas Food Guide is now available to the public. Parents can pick up their own copy at the Richmond Health Department. There is more information on the food guide plus interactive tools on the website: www.healthcanada.gc.ca/foodguide
GIRLS' BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS!!
Congratulations to our Senior Girls' basketball team on winning their second consecutive RSSAA senior girls' basketball title on February 15. Steveston began the Richmond playoff tournament with a victory over London and then defeated arch-rival McMath 46-40 in the "AA" final. This was a tremendous team victory as the PACKERS had lost to the Wildcats by 24 points a month earlier! In the Richmond Cup final, Steveston won a thrilling overtime game over McNair 41-40 to capture the league trophy. The Packers completed their season with a tough 1-point loss to Windsor at the Lower Mainland playoffs in late February....great job team, and a very special thank you to graduating players Amber Shikaze and Kelsie Pelling for all their hard work and commitment to Packer basketball over the years! Our Junior Girls team also enjoyed a great year, finishing 2nd in the RSSAA playoffs and advancing to the Vancouver and District championships against the top teams from Burnaby, New West and the North Shore. Thanks to all our coaches and sponsors during the long winter season - next up at Steveston is senior boys rugby, girls soccer, golf, ultimate, track and field and boys volleyball.
Grade 7 Basketball Tournament Awesome!
Congratulations to Mr. McBurney (and Mr. Evans from London) and our Athletic Leadership class for organizing and officiating another fabulous Grade 7 basketball tournament on March 13-15. Girls and boys teams from the family of feeder schools from both Steveston and London played games at both high schools over the 3 days. 12 teams participated and the young students played with great skill and sportsmanship. The tourney included fun hot shot contests and was both a great organizational and leadership opportunity for our students as well as a wonderful chance for Grade 7s to experience the big gyms with the glass backboards a small taste of the exciting life at high school.

Steveston-London Dance a Big Hit!
315 students from London and Steveston attended a dance at Steveston on March 8 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. The dance was organized jointly by the Student Councils at both schools and was promoted as a great opportunity for students from both schools to have fun and get to know one another better in a relaxed social gathering. The Flashback theme was very popular and many students from both schools dressed up in fun retro costumes - everything from the 50s to the 80s was spotted at the dance - tight jeans, bell bottoms, aviator shades, big collars and disco pant-suits! Thanks to the administrators, Ms. Hoffman, Mr. Evans, Mr. Wallace, two of our great Noon Hour supervisors (Karol and Doris) and all the keen student teachers who volunteered to supervise the event. A big congratulations to the London and Steveston Student Council members as the dance was a huge success!
