Energy Conservation Resources Our school district strives to conserve energy wherever and whenever possible. In order to accomplish energy conservation, we address three key areas for each building; design, operation and occupant use. Our district encourages all staff and students to promote and exhibit energy conservative behaviours. Click the banner for each section to go to the main website for each section.                                                                                          Title Gr Description What is Energy   K Students will discuss what energy is and how they use it and identify energy source. Who Left the Lights On? K Students will discuss what energy is and how they use it and identify energy source. Where's the Drip? K Students go on a hunt in their classroom and schoolyard to look for water and report leaks. Be in Control 1 Students will explore how they can modify their behaviour to save energy and sign an energy contract to signify their commitment to energy conservation. Zap Traps 1 Students look around the school, and at home with help of parents, to identify devices that consume energy Movers and Shakers 2 Students will learn to look for wind tunnels and be able to avoid wind shadows. Sky's the Limit  2 Students will create kites from recycled materials to harness the power of the wind. It's All in the Timing   3 Student will investigate a number of devices to determine how timers can reduce the energy used at home. Light Detective 4 Students will examine how electric lights are used in the school and determine if there are alternate sources of light that can be used in order to cut down on the amount of electricity being used. Conservation of Energy 5 Students will examine their use of energy over a period of time. They will develop a plan for reducing their overall energy consumption. Solar Power 5 Students will create a solar panel to discover how the sun can be used as a form of energy. Energy Efficient Buildings 7 Students will create plans for an energy efficient addition to the school. They will work in small groups with each group having responsibility for examining one aspect of the problem. Where's the Heat? 7 Students will discover how buildings are heated. Students will find sources of heat loss within the school and how this can be prevented. Types of Lights 8 Students will examine the types of lighting used at school. They will create a spreadsheet of this information to determine how costs could be reduced at the school if energy efficient lights were used wherever possible. They will also look at current practices for timing devices at the school and board level for automatically turning lights on and off. They will examine: inside lighting, emergency lighting, exit lighting, outdoor lighting and floodlights. Where Did the Electricity Go? 9 Students will have the opportunity to identify problems and research potential solutions regarding the efficiency of energy use. Lights Off/Computers Off All Students will create kites from recycled materials to harness the power of the wind. Energy Ambassadors 9-12 An awareness, action and leadership program for B.C. high school students. Community Partnerships & Contests All BC Hydro sponsors numerous community initiatives, including Go Beyond, a large-scale campus climate action campaign.
