School District No. 38 Carbon Neutral Action Report
Under the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets Act, all public sector organizations are required to report out annually on their plans and actions taken to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.In addition, core government is required to report on emissions associated with business travel beginning in October 2007 through the end of 2008, and on the offsets purchased to achieve carbon neutral travel.

BC Green Games Winners Announced
On Earth Day, April 22, 2010, students across British Columbia will celebrate their entries in the second annual BC Green Games, Science World’s province-wide contest that rewards students’ eco-actions. Winners of the contest, including teams from Richmond, were announced today and will receive $1,000 each for their school. Viewer’s Choice winners will also receive $500 for their school.
“We continue to be inspired by the students who participate in BC Green Games,” says Pauline Finn, vice president of Community Outreach with Science World. “They show us all what can be accomplished when you not only talk about being eco-conscious, but take action to be green.”
In Richmond, students from W D Ferris Elementary won for their project, “A Green Year” and students from Robert Alexander McMath Secondary won for their project, “Going Green, Going Global.” All projects can be viewed at bcgreengames.ca. Participants are encouraged to celebrate their projects on Earth Day or with Science World at TELUS World of Science. At TELUS World of Science, winners will be recognized in a special event beginning at 10:00am on April 22 that will also kick off the official launch of Science World’s feature exhibition, Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet.
Science World manages BC Green Games with input from government, school district, university, science and environmental education community partners. Presenting sponsors are BC Hydro and Terasen Gas.
BC Hydro Invent the Future Contest - Richmond Student Winner 
Cherrie Lam, a Grade 11 student, a secondary student in our district, entered a video into the B.C. Hydro Environment Competition called "Invent the Future". Her short animation was done completely on her own time and she won first prize in the 13-17 year old video competiton and a $2500 award. Cherie's "Use the Grey, Save the Day" video can be seen HERE. ECO-WISE Web Tool
Our district has created a web tool allows schools to explore a variety of ways to promote awareness and behavioural change for environmental sustainability. School green teams can log into the data record area to record progress towards environmental sustainability in key focus areas, including Leadership and Teamwork, Energy Conservation, Waste Management and Green Initiatives. Schools can achieve bronze, silver, gold or even the highest green achievement level in each focus area. Click here for a PREVIEW

Our District Carbon Neutral Action Reports for 2009
The BC Government states 2010 is an important year for BC's public sector. By reducing our own emissions as much as possible and by preventing the release of carbon pollution through BC offset projects, we will be the first jurisdiction in North America to become carbon neutral. Under the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets Act, all public sector organizations are required to report out annually on their plans and actions taken to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. By completing a Carbon Neutral Action Report, our organization is fulfilling its legislated reporting requirements for the 2009 calendar year. I would like to give you a brief summary of our draft document you have before you. Over the past few months, through district committee meetings and discussion with educational and support staff, I have compiled information in this document to reflect our progress during 2009, and where we see us going in the next two years.
